What is the Getty-Dubay Italic Handwriting Series?
How Italics compares to 4 Different Handwriting Styles
"The Natural Way to Write! Give your children the gift of legible writing! Use the program homeschoolers prefer because it makes sense!
- Effective
- Easy to teach
- Fun to learn
- Legible because it’s loop-free!
- Smooth transition from print to cursive – no need to learn two completely different alphabets
.........The child initially learns the basic italic printed letterforms followed by the cursive italic through a series of joins, eliminating the need to learn two distinctly different types of handwriting, as is the case with the ball and stick printing and looped cursive most often taught in schools.
Italic handwriting is distinctive and surprisingly easy to teach and learn. Once you try it, no other handwriting will compare with its simplicity, legibility and beauty.
The main philosophy behind the Getty-Dubay Italic Handwriting Series is to teach children and adults a legible handwriting method that is retained over time. The root of the letterform is used, nothing more, resulting in a crisp, clear handwriting that is as simple as it is elegant."

What if I haven't practiced the Getty & Dubay Method, can I still use Character Italics or other Italic Builder workbooks?
Yes, you can! Although we recommend you purchase the G & D Italic Series books, the character focus in the IB workbooks is immensely valuable for everyone and utilizes the fonts found in the G&D Series. If you are seeking quality copywriting material, these workbooks give the writer the opportunity to copy thoughts and sayings from recognized historical legends.
Which Level do I start at in the Character Builders books?
All levels focus on the same 24 character traits, giving the student ample time and practice to remember and retain the character quotes and poems that are written down. Below is a general guideline of skill levels:
Level I, Book A & B - Printing (Compliments Getty-Dubay Italic Books B & C)
Level II, Book A & B - Beginning Cursive (Compliments Getty-Dubay Italic C & D)
Level III, Book A & B - Intermediate Cursive (Compliments Getty-Dubay Italic D & E)
Level IV, Book A & B - Advanced Cursive (Compliments Getty-Dubay Italic F, G & beyond!)
Each Level shows an alphabet review page in the beginning. As the Levels progress, the size of the fonts get smaller (see the Product page).
